Neuurotoxins & Wrinkle Relaxers in Los Angeles

Did you know that your facial expressions can contribute to the formation of wrinkles? Your facial muscles must contract to smile, laugh, squint, frown, and express a myriad of emotions. Over time, these frequent muscle contractions can leave their mark on your appearance, resulting in the development of fine lines and wrinkles.

Minimally invasive treatments can temporarily reverse the signs of aging caused by facial muscle contractions and in many instances provide a “lift” to brows, mouth corners, and other areas. Dr. Rebecca Fitzgerald can comprehensively treat these problems with quick-acting injectables, commonly referred to as neurotoxins or wrinkle relaxers.

The aging process impacts everyone differently, and as a result, your skin rejuvenation treatment plan must be tailored to your unique individual needs. The best way to determine whether these injectables will achieve your goals is to speak with Dr. Fitzgerald in person in our Larchmont Village office. Please call today to schedule a consultation at our cosmetic dermatology office.

Neurotoxin / Wrinkle Relaxer Options

Dr. Fitzgerald offers four different types of neurotoxins. While they all work similarly, each has its unique characteristics and strengths. Depending on the precise cause and location of the desired effect, Dr. Fitzgerald may recommend:

BOTOX® Cosmetic was the first wrinkle relaxer approved by the FDA. While it has primarily been used to treat frown and worry lines, BOTOX® Cosmetic can also:

  • Reshape a square jaw
  • Lift mouth corners
  • Raise and level droopy brows
  • Drop an encroaching “witch’s chin”
  • Smooth neck bands

Daxxify works similarly to Botox Cosmetic, with additional longevity. It’s the newest – Daxxify is selectively available since early 2023.

Dysport is highly effective at relaxing frown lines as well; however, it also has some additional diffusing effect that works very well for removing fine crinkly lines such as crow’s feet.

Xeomin functions similarly to BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport, but it is referred to as “naked” since it does not contain a specific protein that can potentially result in resistance to the other neuroproteins.

How Long Does it Take to Recover from Injections?

There is essentially no downtime from Botox, Daxxify or the other tiny muscle relaxers. Most people feel comfortable returning to work immediately, though we may ask that you not resume activities like heavy lifting and strenuous exercise.

Slight temporary swelling, redness, and bruising are all common after injectable treatment. However, these side effects are few, and in short order, you’ll be enjoying a more wrinkle-free appearance, lifted brow or slimmer jawline.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

You only need one treatment in to get results, though it may take a couple of weeks to see the final result.

Safe and well-tolerated cosmetic neurotoxins can be injected into multiple treatment areas during a single session: the more sites that are treated, the more profound the final results. During your initial consultation with one of our board-certified dermatologists, we will listen to your concerns, assess your problem areas, and decide where treatment is necessary for optimal results.

How Long Do Wrinkle Relaxers or Neurotoxins Last?

We offer four different wrinkle relaxers at our office. BOTOX® Cosmetic, Xeomin, Daxxify, and Dysport® all last for at least three to four months.

Your results will gradually fade as time passes, and issues like wrinkles or that bit of brow asymmetry will return. Routinely scheduled maintenance treatments keep improvements ongoing.

Are There Any Risks?

Redness, bruising, and slight swelling at the injection site are common, although temporary, side effects of wrinkle relaxers. Some patients also experience a temporary feeling of heaviness or skin tightness in the treatment area. These sensations self-correct within a few weeks.

Serious side effects are rare but may include headache, ptosis, nose and throat irritation, blurred vision, and general muscle weakness. We will provide additional information about potential risks during your initial consultation in Los Angeles to ensure you are selecting the best wrinkle relaxer option.

What is the Difference Between Neurotoxins/Wrinkle Relaxers and Dermal Fillers?

Wrinkle relaxers interrupt the signal between nerves and muscles to prevent tension. This allows dynamic wrinkles – those that occur with facial movement – to relax and smooth, making wrinkle relaxers ideal for crow’s feet, bunny lines, frown lines, and lip lines. The slimming effect of Botox Cosmetic in the jaw is a function of reduced ability to clench or grind your teeth thus allowing the masseter muscle to reduce in size.

Dermal fillers replace volume loss and can stimulate collagen and elastin production to “refill” areas of the face that have become sunken or droopy. Fillers are best for static wrinkles – those that are always present – such as on the cheeks or next to the mouth. Fillers can also add volume to tear troughs, temples, and, depending on the formulation, to other areas such as the lips and the back of the hands.
