What is Ultherapy and How Long Does it Last?

Ultherapy is a non-surgical treatment that tightens skin on the:

  • Brow
  • Chin
  • Neck
  • Chest (the area above the breasts, where a low-cut top would expose)

This procedure works by heating tissue in a targeted layer beneath the surface of the skin. This thermal energy tightens and lifts the skin in two ways:

  • It causes coagulation of the collagen present in the skin
  • It prompts the generation of more collagen in the months that follow

Collagen is a protein present in our bodies. It’s found not only in your skin, but also in your bones, connective tissue, muscles, and tendons. Collagen is a supportive, scaffolding-like material that gives our tissues that plump, smooth, youthful appearance by adding elasticity and strength.

Part of the reason our skin shows signs of aging is because collagen production naturally diminishes with age. Smoking and excessive sun exposure can accelerate the collagen loss. By creating what your body registers as a thermal injury, the ultrasound energy of Ultherapy causes a healing response, which kick starts the production of new collagen. Ultherapy is completely safe and does not harm the targeted tissue or any of the surrounding tissues.

How Long Does It Last?

You might start to notice some tightening of the skin as soon as a month later, but it usually takes 3 months, and then continues to work for up to 6 months, at which point you’ll see full results. It takes time for this to happen because the collagen and elastin will form gradually.

Ultherapy provides long-lasting results, although they are not permanent. The treatment cannot stop the aging process and skin will begin to sag again at some point. Most people are happy with their results for 1-2 years after the initial treatment. At that point, you may opt for touch-up treatments or another facial rejuvenation option.
